Mac thunderbolt display and Close lid (closed clam shell mode)

I was using the big thuderbolt display with Mac book pro, and have connected USB mouse to the display. Now I wanted to operate the Mac pro in closed clam shell mode. Basically closing the lid and screen, but not letting it go to sleep and keep working on the big display.
This did work earlier in Leopard and Tiger with Apple Cinema display by simply closing the lid as mentioned in http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3131
However it did not work with the thunderbolt display on Snow Leopard (Don't have Lion yet).
The fix is ...
1. Close the lid.
2. Unplug the thunderbolt cable.
3. Plug it back in.
4. Click the mouse.
